Eligibility and exclusion criteria Basics:
1. Ages 18-60. No major communicable diseases such as HIV/Hepatitis C and Hepatitis B or major cardiac illness, autoimmune disorders, severe diabetes, history of undergoing a transplant, recent back surgery, severe obesity, chronic lung disease. People with TB or people taking Insulin cannot be a donor either.
2. Ethnic heritage is very important since chances of matching with someone of similar HLA type is higher.
3. Tissue sample for registration is an oral swab (no blood needed)
4. Collection usually is similar to a more involved form of Blood donation via an IV line- which appears to be the need in his case. Occasionally depending on patient needs may need to be a bone marrow donation.
5. Recovery period after donation- short.
6. Marrow recovery in donor if it is a bone marrow donation- 2-6 weeks. In peripheral blood stem cell collection quickly after the donation.
7. Obligation: You could refuse later if contacted.
8. Duration of one staying in registry- until age 60 or if you develop major illness and contact the registry.
9. Indications for the procedure for the recipient: Some forms of leukemia or lymphoma who are not eligible to undergo a self transplant or who do not have siblings or have matched siblings then they proceed to a matched unrelated donor. This in such cases is the patients only chance to survive (some may not).
